DES MOINES, Iowa- Gonzaga Track and Field opened their first day at the Drake Relays with a victory from Anna Grabowski in the 5,000 meters, marking the second straight year that a GU runner has won the 5k at America's Athletic Classic.
Grabowski took the win at one of college running's premier meets with a time of 16:33.98. Running through inclement weather, she ran in the peloton for the first half of the race before taking the front of the race with the four laps to go. Grabowski secured the win on her birthday, taking home the victory with a strong finish with back to back sub 80 second laps on the final two laps.
Jacob Alfonso and Charlie Goss represented the men's side at the Relays. Alfonso finished fourth in his 1500 meters race, ending with a time of 3:54.63. Goss finished with a time of 1:53.99 in the 800 meters, running very even splits to finish with his final time.
Several more Gonzaga runners will take to the track at Drake tomorrow. The men's team will run in the 4x1600 meters relay at 10am pacific time, while the women's team will have two runners in the 400 meters race set for 3:15 pacific time.
