SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball (25-14, 13-2 WCC) set a program record win streak with their 12th straight victory with a 4-3 win over LMU (12-31, 3-13 WCC) on Friday.
The current win streak is the longest active streak in Division 1 baseball. Gonzaga has not lost a game since April 2nd and has now won 21 of their last 24 games. Maddox Haley set a new program record for consecutive games with a hit, extending his hitting streak to 27 straight games with a hit.
The Zags were led by a phenomenal pair of pitchers, with Justin Feld and Landon Hood throwing for 18 strikeouts. This tied for the fourth most strikeouts by GU in the past two decades, and was tied for the third most strikeouts ever thrown in a game at Patterson Complex.
Feld had another great start, picking up his fourth straight win after throwing for 6.2 innings. He had 12 strikeouts, which tied for the fourth most by a pitcher at Patterson Complex. Hood picked up the save with 2.1 innings of scoreless work, striking out six more LMU batters while not allowing a hit.
LMU originally jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to two unearned runs in the second inning. Matt Moreno hit a solo home run to give the Lions the lead in the fourth. Â The Gonzaga pitching staff rallied after the brief lead, holding LMU hitless for the final five innings. The solo shot was the final hit for Loyola Marymount the entire game.
The Gonzaga batters also rose to the task to come back for the win, scoring four runs in the fifth inning. Jacob Wrubleski had a leadoff single and opened the GU scoring on an RBI from Ricky Sanchez. Mikey Bell stepped into the box with two batters on and smacked a ball to deep left center field to give Gonzaga the lead and eventual win. Feld and Hood combined to allow only two walks (neither of which advanced past first base) after taking the lead as GU took over to protect the lead to lock in the win.
Gonzaga will look to keep building on the win streak when they face LMU again at Patterson Baseball Complex, taking on the Lions at 6pm on Saturday.
