Karsten Sweum and Landon Hood win WCC weekly awards

SAN BRUNO, Calif.- Gonzaga Baseball picked up another two weekly awards form the WCC on Monday, with Karsten Sweum winning Pitcher of the Week and Landon Hood once again winning Freshman of the Week.

Karsten Sweum had a tremendous start in Saturday's win, keeping a perfect game through the first six innings before finally giving up a hit. Sweum only allowed four baserunners over 7.2 innings, retiring the first 18 batters he saw and giving up just one walk. He struck out 10 batters, his second straight home game with double-digit punchouts. This is the second time this season that Sweum has been named the WCC's Pitcher of the Week. He currently has 76 strikeouts, which ranks second in the WCC and in the top forty nationally. Sweum is 6-1 on the year with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.

Landon Hood picked up the save on Friday's win, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings to secure the final victory. He did not allow a hit and allowed only two walks. Hood struck out six batters, good for a 23.14 K/9 ratio on the night and striking out six of seven possible outs. He has now been named the WCC Freshman of the Week five times this season. No other player has won the award more than once this year. Hood has a 2.95 ERA and a .173 batting average against.
