Sweum, Sanchez secure national awards for GU Baseball

SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball continues to have players impress on a national stage, with Karsten Sweum securing three more national awards on Tuesday. Ricky Sanchez was also named the national Shortstop of the Week

Sweum was named to Baseball America's National Team of the Week, named the national Co-Pitcher of the Week by the NCBWA, and Perfect Game's National Co-Pitcher of the Week. He picks up the national notice after throwing a no-hitter on Saturday to secure the WCC regular season title for the Zags. picking up the award after he threw the sixth no-hitter in Gonzaga history on Saturday.

 Sweum struck out 15 of the 21 outs in the game. He allowed just two walks and struck out 11 of the 12 total batters he faced in the middle four innings of his start. He needed just 93 pitches for the no-hitter, throwing 63 of those for strikes. Sweum has now won conference pitcher of the week three times this season and twice in the last three weeks. He currently leads the WCC with strikeouts on the season with 99. He has now been named the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week twice and is the third Zag named to Baseball America's National Team of the Week this year. 

Ricky Sanchez received the Brooks Wallace award, given by the College Baseball Foundation to the top shortstop in the nation in a week. Sanchez batted leadoff for the Zags in all four wins, putting up a .500 (7-for-14) batting average with two doubles, six runs scored, two RBI, and six walks. He played perfect defense in 18 chances while helping to turn four double plays for the Zags.
