Zags set program WCC wins record with 5-1 win over Seattle

SPOKANE, Wash- Gonzaga Baseball (34-17, 21-5 WCC) set a new program record for WCC wins, securing their 21st conference win of the season with a 5-1 victory over Seattle (18-30, 11-15 WCC).

Karsten Sweum had another fantastic start, keeping Seattle scoreless over six innings. Sweum struck out nine batters while only allowing three hits and a single walk. He threw just 85 pitches in the quality start, locating 59 of those for strikes. Landon Hood picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching the final three innings and striking out another five batters.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Zags opened the scoring in the third on back to back doubles by Tommy Eisenstat and Bo Shinkle. The Zags had four doubles today, bringing their double total up to eleven in the first two games in the series. The Zags added another three runs in the sixth inning, with Hudson Shupe driving in two more runs on yet another double. Jacob Wrubleski then drove in Shupe with a single, driving the lead up to five. Seattle hit a solo home run to cut into the lead in the ninth inning before Hood closed out the game with no further runs.

Gonzaga Baseball set a new school single season WCC wins record with today's victory, bringing the season total to 21 conference wins for the Zags. Gonzaga will hope to keep building on that record when they host Seattle on Saturday at 1pm. Saturday's game will be the final home regular season WCC event for Gonzaga Athletics ahead of a move to the PAC-12 in the next academic year.
