Biography
2021-22 (Senior): Backes, a senior at Gonzaga, appeared in five events this past 2021-22 season. He had one of his best overall seasons with the Bulldogs shooting an average score of 74.57. He finished in the top-5 for his team for all five events this season. In the Nick Watney Invitational, he had a +9 with his best score being a 72 in the first round, coming in first for his team and assisting the team to 10th place in this event. Backes also came in first for his team shooting a 69 in the second round assisting the team to 20th place in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. Backes comes in No. 13 for career best scoring average in men’s golf at Gonzaga shooting a career average at Gonzaga of 75.33 ... named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar ... Academic All-Conference First Team.
SENIOR (2020-21): Played in five tournaments for a total of 15 rounds… Had a 76.20 stroke average on the year.
JUNIOR (2019-20): Appeared in two events … 73.80 scoring average … tying for 54th at the Husky Invitational on Sept. 16-17, finished six-over (150) in weather-shortened two-round event … tied for 57th at Nick Watney Invitational at six-over (219) … season-low round of 68 in third round.
SOPHOMORE (2018-19): Appeared in five events…76.40 scoring average…played 15 rounds…low round of 72 at the Loyola Intercollegiate…best finish of tied for 48th at the Loyola Collegiate…finished at six-over (222) during the tournament…One top-50 finish ... Honorable Mention Academic All-Conference.
FRESHMAN (2017-18): Appeared in four events... played in 12 rounds... shot a season-best 67 in the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship... recorded two top-50 finishes on the season...finished 9 over par in the West Coast Conference Championships.
HIGH SCHOOL: Named First Team All-Columbia Basin Big Nine following his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. He is a two-time CBBN Player of the Year, was the district champion last season, after placing second in a tiebreaker in 2015. In 2015, Backes played in the Junior World and Big I National Championships. He was in the final eight of the 2015 Junior PNGA Championships. Backes is a member of the National Honors Society at EHS, and is in the top five percent of his class with a 3.75 grade point average.
