A native of Spokane, DeLong graduated from North Central High School in 1971, lettering in football, baseball, wrestling and track for the Indians. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-therapy from Eastern Washington State College (known today as Eastern Washington University) in 1976, then earned his Master's of Science in College Teaching in physical education with emphasis in athletic training in 1978. He is certified to teach physical education, athletic training and first aid.
A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, DeLong has been active on several regional committees for NATA. DeLong also organized the training staff for the 1989 Centennial Games held in Spokane.
DeLong and his wife Kaye have two children, Raner (1984) and Brynn (1989).
