Gonzaga Volleyball Head Coach Katie Wilson announced the addition of Michele Maxwell to its coaching staff as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator on April 4, 2023, bringing in an assistant coach who's been a part of three NCAA Tournament teams.Â
Maxwell comes to Spokane with seven years of coaching experience, including time at Texas Tech, Texas State and most recently Mercer University. The Garland, Texas native got her start coaching club in the nation's most competitive volleyball hotspot, working her way up through D-I level by embracing a variety of roles.
"Michele has an infectious personality," said GU Head Coach Katie Wilson. "She brings energy to the room. She is passionate about teaching the game and connecting with student-athletes. We are thrilled to welcome Michele to the Zag family!"
Maxwell's previous coaching experience includes a wide array of responsibilities – at Mercer, where she was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, she trained liberos and pin hitters and managed scouting reports and practice planning as well as overseeing the team's academic success. She organized recruiting and other operations efforts for the Bears as well, overseeing graduate assistants and helping facilitate social media and other external communications.
During her time at Texas State as a GA, the Bobcats made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2019 and 2020, winning the Sun Belt title both years. She also was a part of an NCAA Tournament team at Texas Tech in 2021, where she was a volunteer assistant. Over the four seasons that Maxwell has been a D-I assistant, the three teams she has coached for have combined to go 82-50.
Maxwell earned her Bachelor of General Studies from Texas State University in 2018 with minors in Exercise Sports Studies, Psychology, and Leadership Studies. She also holds a Master of Science with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning and Sports Coaching from Texas State University in 2021.
