Father Arthur L. Dussault, S.J. was described in a history of Gonzaga University as “ubiquitous,” appropriate in the sense of Father Art’s seaming omnipresence on campus. Where the university observed its centennial in 1987, he had been at Gonzaga for 65 years. As a youngster from Butte, Mont., he excelled as an athlete, particularly in basketball and football. He was a center on the great football squads of the early 1920’s – there is a tale from that era of his flight from hostile Indians, Haskell Institute Indians to be precise, and with a blocked punt for a touchdown in a classic game. Father Art served Gonzaga as athletic director and moderator, and as confidant and advisor as well, thus contributing to the morale and morality of generations of student athletes. His proclivity for landscaping lent beauty and order to the university’s playing fields. He was presented with the DeSmet Medal, Gonzaga’s highest honor, in 1979.
