LMU Slips By Women's Soccer, 3-2

SPOKANE, Wash. - Loyola Marymount University received to second half goals to overcome a halftime deficit and slip by Gonzaga, 3-2, in a West Coast Conference match Friday afternoon at a rainy Martin Field in Spokane.

The Lions jumped on the board just 46 seconds into the match as Angela Ichinose scored off a direct kick from the upper left hand corner of the goal box. The ball soared just over the outstretched finger tips of Gonzaga keeper Gina Legaz. After that early goal, Legaz would settle down in goal making five first half saves.

Gonzaga evened the match at the 11:21 mark as Kelly Leffel sent a ball into the front of the goal box from the left corner. Sara Streufert headed the pass beating LMU goalkeeper Tracy Sharp. The Zags took the lead during the 32nd minute when Tracy Sharp stopped a charging Kelly Leffel sending the ball to the left hand side of the box. Sara Streufert touched home the deflected shot for her second goal of the match and 10th of the season. Gonzaga would hold onto the lead heading into the half despite being outshot 11-4.

In the second half Loyola Marymount put on the attack sending several balls into the goal area which were turned away by the Gonzaga defense led by Claire Whitfield in the middle. LMU finally knotted the score at 2-2 in the 69th minute when Angela Ichinose scored her second goal of the game on an indirect kick. Myka Peck touched the ball to put it in play before Ichinose sent a bending shot into the upper left corner of the net.

Gonzaga had a late chance to take the lead as a Kelly Leffel ball just missed the open net on the near right side. Loyola Marymount finally broke the tie in the 81st minute as Laura Trask headed home a ball sent in by Angela Ichinose.

Gonzaga dropped to 3-13-0 and 0-6-0 in the West Coast Conference. The Zags will face Pepperdine at home next Friday before ending the season on November 5 against the University of Idaho. With her four points Sara Streufert moved her career total to 97 points and needs just three more in the Zags final two matches to become just the 10th player in WCC history with 100 career points.

With the win Loyola Marymount improves to 10-4-1 and 3-0-0 in the West Coast Conference. The Lions will wrap up their two game trip to the Pacific Northwest with a WCC match on Sunday in Portland.
