SEATTLE - A day after ending its school record 18-game losing streak, Gonzaga University's volleyball team could not make it two wins in a row falling to the University of Washington. The Huskies won the contest in three games by scores of 15-10, 15-13, 15-1.
Both teams came out firing in the opening game as Washington compiled a .351 hitting percentage and Gonzaga countered at a .265 clip. Senior Heather Osberg was again the Bulldogs big gun as she had 7 of her match-high 18 kills in the opening set. Washington was led in the early going by the trio of Paige Benjamin, Allison Richardson and Lisa Underhill.
In the second game neither team could gain control of the contest as the teams traded the lead several times before the Huskies finally prevailed with a 15-13 margin. Osberg again led the Gonzaga charge with Britt Whiting adding several kills for GU.
The final game signaled Gonzaga's weakness all season as the Zags committed several attack errors finishing the final game with a negative attack percentage. Washington took advantage of 6 Bulldog miscues as they rolled to a 15-1 victory in the final game.
Gonzaga dropped to 5-24 on the season as they were led by Heather Osberg with 16 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Heather Signor led Gonzaga with 16 digs as the Bulldogs fell in their first match against Washington since 1996. Gonzaga will conclude its 2000 season Thanksgiving weekend when they participate in the Boise State tournament with matches against Boise State and Idaho.
Washington improved to 8-19 overall and was led by Lisa Underhill's 14 kills. A foursome of players reached double-digit digs led by Allison Richardson and Gretchen Maurer with 13 each.
