SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's women's basketball team dropped their sixth consecutive West Coast Conference game Thursday night to the University of San Diego 77-64.
The Bulldogs fall to 9-15 overall and 2-9 in the WCC while San Diego improves to 13-10 overall and 6-5 in the WCC.
The Zags trailed the entire contest and could get no closer than seven points in the second half after going into the locker room behind 38-29. Gonzaga was unable to contain USD senior Susie Erpelding who matched her career-high with 26 points. Erpelding canned 5-of-13 field goal attempts and sunk 13-of-15 from the free throw line. Senior Jessica Gray added 17 points and seven rebounds while teammate Kerri Nakamoto chipped in 11 points.
Jessica Malone finished the night with a team-high 20 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs. Senior Jessica Waltz came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points, dish out four assists and collect two steals. Senior Sydney Perno was the only other Bulldog to reach double-figures in scoring. Perno finished with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Free throws played a big part in the Toreros victory. San Diego buried 27-of-36 (75-percent) from the charity stripe while the Zags hit just 12-of-25 (48-percent) from the line.
For the game Gonzaga connected on 43-percent of its shots from the field while USD shot 47-percent from the floor.
The Toreros dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Zags 39-28.
Gonzaga will be back on the court Saturday night when they travel to Moraga, CA to face Saint Mary's College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
