SPOKANE, Wash. - For the second consecutive night Gonzaga University's women's volleyball team could not hold on for their first West Coast Conference victory. The University of San Francisco rallied from a 2-1 deficit to drop the Bulldogs in five games, 15-13, 1-15, 10-15, 15-10, 15-12 on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (4-11, 0-2 WCC) had five players reach double figures in kills and finished the match with a .229 attack percentage but could not put away the Dons (9-4, 1-1 WCC) in games four and five. The Bulldogs fell behind early both games and were unable to rally for the victory.
Blocking errors hampered the Bulldogs all night. As a team the Zags had 12 blocking errors compared to the Dons four.
Senior Heather Osberg smashed a team-high 21 kills and added a team-high 18 digs for the Zags. Redshirt Freshman Natasha Kozen finished with a career-high 18 kills while sophomore Britt Whiting added 17 kills and 15 digs. Freshmen Jamie VanMeetren and Abby Cullen added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Setter Emilie Heggli finished the night with 67 assists and 17 digs.
Four San Francisco players hit in double-digits for kills led by Teresa Russell and Laura Tinetti's 23 each. Russell also added 14 digs and 8 blocks while hitting .488. Alyssa Jones and Brittanie Budinger added 13 and 12 kills respectively.
Gonzaga returns to action Friday night when they travel to Moraga, CA to face Saint Mary's College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
