Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team dropped its first game of the American Dream Classic Friday night to New Mexico State University 78-71.

The Aggies jumped out to a quick start tallying nine points before Bulldog Jessica Malone answered with a 3-point shot almost five minutes into the half.

Mari Sanchez slowly pulled the Aggies away, hitting 4-of-8 3-pointers for 12 points at halftime.

The Aggies continued to connect, shooting 41 percent from the field and a perfect 23-for-23 from the free throw line for the game.

GU shot just 23 percent from the field, keeping NMSU in sight by sinking 75 percent from the foul line. The Bulldogs trailed 42-27 at the half.

NMSU maintained a second-half lead, pulling away by as many as 19 points.

Gonzaga rallied late in the second half, going on a 19 to 8 run to pull within six points with 2:30 left.

The Bulldogs finished with 36 percent from the field and 76.5 from the line.

Malone led the Bulldogs with a team-high 17 points followed by freshman Ashley Burke with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Raeanna Jewell contributed 10 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Ivana Stojkovic led the Aggies with 18 points 11 rebounds.

The Bulldogs continue tourney action Saturday afternoon against host Idaho State University at 2 p.m. PST at Reed Gym.
