Gonzaga University added to its longest losing streak in the team's history by losing their 13th straight game with a 70-54 West Coast Conference women's basketball loss to Santa Clara University on Thursday at The Kennel.
With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 5-21 overall and 0-13 in the WCC as Santa Clara (19-6, 10-3) handed GU its record-setting 13th straight loss. Gonzaga broke the record in a 60-37 loss to Loyola Marymount University on February 16th as the previous record was established by last year's team by losing 10 in a row to close out a 9-19 season.
The Bulldogs trailed 33-27 at halftime. Gonzaga's Jessica Malone (11) and Triana Allen (8) kept the Zags close as they combined for 19 of the team's 27 first-half points. SCU forced GU into 15 first half turnovers while the Broncos gave the ball away four times.
The Broncos opened the second half on an 18-4 scoring spree as they stretched their lead to 20 points (51-31) at the 10:11 mark. SCU's second half explosion was led by Courtney Cushings nine points as she posted a 3-for-3 clip from the floor.
The Broncos built a 60-37 lead, the largest of the night, on Jennie Rondel's 3-pointer with 5:40 remaining. Gonzaga couldn't close the gap any closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Both teams shot the ball efficiently as GU shot 39 percent (21-of-54) as Santa Clara made good on 25-of-63 (40 percent) shots. Jessica Malone led all scorers with 26 points going 10-of-21 from the floor which included a 4-for-12 mark from 3-point range. Malone also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Triana Allen chipped in 10 points and led the Zags with five assists.
SCU used a well-balanced scoring attack as the Broncos finished with six players scoring eight points or more. Kendra Rhea led the way with the team-high 11 points as Julie Butler added 10 points and had a game-high four steals.
Including the WCC Tournament and the regular season, SCU has now won six consecutive games against Gonzaga. The last time the Bulldogs beat the Broncos was Feb. 5, 1998 as SCU fell to GU 72-71 at The Kennel. The Zag women resume WCC action on Saturday when they play host to the Toreros of San Diego University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at The Kennel.
