STILLWATER, Okla. - Zac Cazzell drove in two runs during Oklahoma State's three-run second inning as the Cowboys (30-11) shutdown Gonzaga (17-18) 4-0 on Tuesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The two teams will conclude this series on Wednesday afternoon at the Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Start time has been moved up 15 minutes to 11:45 a.m. (PST).
Gonzaga starting pitcher Errol Simonitsch (2-2) allowed only three hits during his 4.2 innings of work but gave up an important bloop single in the bottom of the second that would give OSU all the runs it would need. Simonitsch walked Jose Virgil and Jake Bollig to start the second. Virgil would steal third base and come around to score on a squeeze bunt that Jimbo McAuliff beat out for a hit. Cazzell then placed a single over the infield into shallow left to score Bollig and McAuliff.
The Bulldogs had several early chances against Oklahoma State starter Justin Meccage (2-0) but could not get a timely base hit. Gonzaga left runners at second and third base in the third and fourth inning as Meccage pitched out of back-to-back jams. Meccage again worked out of trouble in the sixth as Barry Matthews and Jared Hertz connected for back-to-back singles. Meccage was helped out as Kevin Richardson grounded into one of GU's two inning ending double plays during the game.
Oklahoma State added a final run in the seventh as Cazzell doubled to open the inning against Bulldogs relief pitcher Ed Clelland. Nebasett Brown would follow with a triple that scored Cazzell. Clelland forced a fly out and struck out Rob Watson to end the threat.
Matthews and Eric Rodland combined for four of the Bulldogs six hits as each player went 2-for-4. Cazzell and Watson collected two hits each as Oklahoma State finished with six hits.
