SPOKANE, Wash. - The red hot Gonzaga Bulldogs (21-18, 12-9 WCC) swept their second consecutive West Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon as David Hixson (4-5) threw a three-hit shutout in the Bulldogs 9-0 win over Saint Mary's (14-28, 7-14) at August/A.R.T. Gonzaga provided Hixson all the offense he would need in the third inning as Barry Matthews hit a two-run home run to left field. Eric Rodland scored on the play after leading off the inning with a single. Two batters later Nate Gold would hit a solo home run to left off Gaels starter J.G. Larochette (1-4) and Kevin Cave singled home the final Zags run of the inning.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Brian Munhall provided an RBI double in the fourth and came around to score on a Saint Mary's error. GU's runs in the fifth came on a double play with bases loaded and a wild pitch by Gaels reliever Ryan Heil. John Gebbers rounded out the days scoring with a solo home run in the sixth.
Hixson tossed his first complete game of the season striking out ten Saint Mary's batters while walking none. Gold led the GU hitting attack with a 3-for-5 afternoon while Rodland, Hertz and Cave all finished with two hits. Kaazim Summerville, Mark Teahen and Tim Spooner accounted for the three SMC hits.
