PULLMAN, Wash. - Four Gonzaga players tallied double-digit kills Friday morning as the Bulldogs opened the volleyball season with a victory over Boise State in the 2001 Cougar Challenge. Gonzaga rallied to win the final three games of the match as they downed Boise State in four games, 27-30, 30-20, 30-17 and 30-27.
In the opening game Christina Moore hammered home two consecutive kills as the Broncos moved out to a 18-13 lead early in the game. Gonzaga closed the margin to 25-24 as newcomer Zuzana Tumova had back-to-back kills. After trading points Jacqueline Heler would finish off a four-point BSU rally with a kill to win the first game 30-27.
In the second game Gonzaga used two long scoring sequences to finish off Boise State 30-20. Katerina Chroustovska led the first rally as the Zags opened up a 17-11 lead midway through the game. After Boise State closed the margin to 20-17, Jamie VanMeetren had three kills as the Zags pulled away scoring 11 of the last 14 points.
Gonzaga kept the momentum going in the third game opening with a 8-0 run. Freshman Christina Davis looked solid in the spurt with two kills and a block for points. Boise State made a small run to get within seven points midway through the game, but Abby Cullen squashed the rally with three kills for points as Gonzaga rolled 30-17.
The Zags had to rally late in the final game outscoring the Broncos down the stretch to win the game 30-27. Boise State had moved out to a 19-11 lead as Heler added two of her nine kills. Gonzaga closed the gap to 23-22 as VanMeetren had two kills for points and one of her two service aces. The teams traded points on the next two plays before Tumova sealed the GU win with two of her game high 16 kills on the final four points.
Gonzaga (1-0) snapped a six-match losing skid to Boise State (0-1) as the Zags win their season opener. Tumova led all players with 16 kills while Cullen added 13 for Gonzaga. Joy Baldwin was the top attacker for Boise State finishing with 10 kills. Gonzaga faces No. 12 Pacific (2-1) later on Friday afternoon. Pacific opened the Cougar Classic with a 3-2 win over Bradley.
