Volleyball Drops Five Game Thriller To American

LAS VEGAS - The Gonzaga University volleyball team fell to 1-1 in the Gameworks/UNLV Invitational as American University defeated Gonzaga in a five game thriller. The Eagles (5-0) knocked off the Zags 30-14, 18-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-7.

In the Saturday opener, American connected for a .241 attack percentage as the Eagles prevailed in the five-game match. Zuzana Tumova led the Gonzaga attack with 18 kills while Abby Cullen came off the bench with 14 kills.

American was led by Karla Kucerkova who knocked down 19 of the Eagles 71 kills in the match. Judith Szekelyhidi and Darla Bobko also finished with double-digit kills at 14 and 11 each.

The Zags were able to stay in the game as they had 21 blocks against American. Cullen had a big day in front of the net with two solo blocks and five blocks assisted. Christina Davis and Tumova each added three service aces for the Zags.
