Women's Basketball Edged By Pepperdine 77-69

SPOKANE, Wash. - Damaris Hinojosa scored 23 points Thursday night to lead the Pepperdine University Waves (12-5, 3-0) to a 77-69 West Coast Conference victory over the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (10-7, 1-2) in front of a crowd of 854 at the Kennel.

Senior forward Jessica Malone paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 23 points, scoring 15 first-half points.

Freshman Raeanna Jewell recorded her first career double-double pulling down 13 rebounds and 10 points for the Zags. Shannon Mathews narrowly missed a second Bulldog double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

The Waves set out to an early lead dominating the first half and pulling away by as many 15 points with 5:29 left. Pepperdine left for the locker room with a 45-31 lead. The Waves shot 55.9 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from 3-point territory and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Gonzaga shot a first-half 36.4 from the field, 27.3 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Malone's fourth 3-pointer of the night at 11:43 triggered the Zags 17-4 point run to give them the 65-60 lead with 6:27 left.

The Waves chipped away at their 5-point deficit to tie the game at 67-67 with under four minutes remaining. Hinojosa contributed two consecutive 3-pointers to secure the Waves 77-69 win.

The Bulldogs finished with 36.4 percent from the field, 30.8 percent from 3-point range and 81.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Gonzaga continues WCC action at the Kennel Saturday night against Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
