SPOKANE, Wash. - Christina Davis hammered home a career-high 26 kills on Saturday night as the Gonzaga Bulldogs earned their first West Coast Conference win of the season in a five-game thriller against San Francisco (4-16, 0-4 WCC). The Bulldogs improved to 3-14 overall, 1-3 in WCC action as they won 30-18, 26-30, 29-31, 30-27 and 15-13.
Davis was on fire all night long as she finished with a .404 attack percentage during her 52 attack attempts. Davis' previous career-high was a 24-kill effort last season against UNLV in a five game Bulldogs win. Gonzaga finished with a .304 team attack percentage, their second highest total of the season.
The Bulldogs pulled away in the first game as Jamie VanMeetren served the Bulldogs to a 6-0 run midway through the game. VanMeetren dropped in two service aces and Abby Cullen had two of her 10 kills in the win.
San Francisco responded in the second game behind the steady play of setter Kristina Bognar. Bognar finished with a triple double, setting a school record for attack percentage with 15 kills on 18 attacks for an .833 clip. Bognar added 53 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
Game three came down to the final points as the two teams traded attacks to get to 28-28 and then 29-29. Brittanie Budinger's kill ended the Gonzaga hopes as USF won the third game 31-29.
The Bulldogs limited San Francisco to a .093 attack percentage in fourth game as Gonzaga pulled out to an early lead and held on for the 30-27 victory. Christina Davis led the Zags with six kills in the fourth game while VanMeetren and Cullen combined for six more.
Davis saved her biggest attacking effort for the final game as she had five of Gonzaga's ten kills. The Bulldogs hit .471 in the final game as they won their second five-game match of the season. Earlier this year Gonzaga earned its first victory of the season during a five-game win over Florida Atlantic.
Budinger led San Francisco with 21 kills and ten digs. KeLicia Shorts finished with five blocks including three solo.
Three Bulldog players joined Davis in double-digit kills with VanMeetren adding 15, Natasha Kozen 13 and Cullen 10. Missy Perry had a match-high 18 digs and 56 assists. Gonzaga travels to Saint Mary's and San Diego next weekend for West Coast Conference action.
