Women's soccer shutout 2-0 by Pepperdine

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine University Waves (11-1-2, 1-1-0) notched their first West Coast Conference victory of the year as they scored two late-half goals to shutout the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (5-8-0, 0-2-0) 2-0 Friday afternoon at Martin Field.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half as the Waves out-shot the Bulldogs 6-5. The Waves than dominated the second half, out-shooting the Bulldogs 8-2 as they finished with 14 shots to the Bulldogs seven.

Pepperdine junior midfielder April Blaker scored her first goal of the season as she put an end the 0-0 stalemate at 74:36 when she powered a hard low unassisted shot from six yards out into the far left of the net past goalkeeper Ashley Haugen.

The Waves struck again in the 86th minute when junior forward Lacey Ubaldi also recorded her first goal of the year as she took a short cross from Jenna Fodor, forcing the ball through a lot of traffic and into the far left side from five yards out.

Gonzaga sophomore Annie Hawkins led the Bulldogs with two shots including a 20-yard lofty kick that missed the top of the goal by mere inches in the 11th minute.

Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen picked up six saves as Waves goaleeper Anna Picarelli tallied one. Gonzaga forward Jesse Torres was issued a yellow card warning at 62:22.

The Bulldogs continue WCC action Sunday against the Loyola Marymount University Lions as they host the first match of a double header at Noon. The Gonzaga men's soccer team takes the field at 2 p.m. against the Santa Clara University Broncos.
