SAN FRANCISCO - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team remained winless in the West Coast Conference as the Bulldogs (3-15, 0-4 WCC) fell short against host San Francisco on Saturday night. The Lady Dons (17-2, 2-2 WCC) rebounded from a game three loss to win the match in four, 30-23, 30-28, 27-30, 30-12.
The match was highlighted by several long rallies as both teams played solid defense, San Francisco finishing the night with 86 digs compared to 75 by Gonzaga. Nine players finished with double-digit digs as Bulldogs senior Heather Signor finished with a match-high 19. Brittanie Budinger and Caroline Skacel each had 18 digs to lead San Francisco.
The match also see-sawed in momentum as USF won game one and held off Gonzaga in game two by with two late points. The Bulldogs responded with a game three win before failing to get anything going in game four. GU finished with only five kills in the final game compared to 17 kills for USF.
Teresa Russell led the Lady Dons offense with 18 kills while Budinger and Skacel added 15 each as USF had four players reach double figures in kills.
A night after being limited to only two kills between them, juniors Christina Davis and Lauren Armas led Gonzaga with a combined 24 kills. Davis led the Bulldogs with 14 kills while Armas was GU's most effective attacker with 10 kills on 17 attack attempts. Davis also added 10 digs as GU had four players with double-digit digs.
Gonzaga returns to action on Tuesday night when the Bulldogs travel to the University of Idaho for a 7 p.m. contest. Following that road match GU will host nationally ranked Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Friday and Saturday night. Both matches will start at 7 p.m. at Martin Centre.
