SPOKANE, Wash. - Ashley Anderson, Anne Bailey and Ashley Burke combined for 42 points, but the Gonzaga University women's team was unable to overtake No. 24 University of Oregon, as the Ducks defeated the Bulldogs, 73-57, in Gonzaga's home opener at The Kennel.
Anderson, Bailey and Burke each scored in double figures for the Bulldogs (1-2). Burke led the team, tying with Oregon's Andrea Bills with a game-high 16 points. Bailey came close to a double-double, falling short by one rebound with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Anderson scored 11 points with six rebounds and one steal. This marks the third-consecutive game that Anderson has ended the game with six rebounds.
The Ducks (3-0) had five players in double figures, four with over ten points and Corrie Mizusawa with 14 assists. With the figure, Mizusawa is tied for second in Oregon's season record books.
Kedzie Gunderson, Bills, Brandi Davis and Carolyn Ganes all marked double digits for the Ducks. Bills led with 16 points, and Ganes followed with 15 points. Gunderson and Davis each scored 11 points for the Ducks.
The Bulldogs broke even at the half against the nationally ranked Ducks. The score was tied seven times within the first 20:00, with no team leading by more than three points. Bailey had already posted 10 points and six rebounds at the half, joined by Oregon's Bills with 10 points and three boards.
The second half proved a different story as the Ducks gained momentum at 14:06 with a layup by Carolyn Ganes to take the lead, 41-40. Ganes scored eight of the next 12 points for the Ducks for a five-point lead, 48-53.
The advantage would remain solely to Oregon for the remainder of the game as the Ducks defeated the Bulldogs by a 16-point margin, 73-57.
Gonzaga shot 43.4 percent (23-53) from the field, while Oregon hammered in 52.6 percent (30-57). The Bulldogs took advantage of the charity stipe, shooting 66.7 percent (10-15) and the Ducks marked 60 percent (9-15).
Gonzaga takes to the road for the second-straight weekend to participate in the Seattle Times Classic, hosted by University of Washington. The Bulldogs will take on the Huskies on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m., then will face either Oklahoma State University or Yale University in a second-round match.
