UW Tops Women's Basketball In Second Half

SEATTLE, Wash. - University of Washington continued its 14-game home win streak as the Huskies defeated the Gonzaga University women's basketball team, 70-56, on Friday evening in the first round of the Seattle Times Classic.

Andrea Lalum led Washington (3-0) with 25 points and six rebounds, scoring 15 of her points in the first half. Giuliana Mendiola added 22 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Husky effort.

The Bulldogs (1-3) were led by sophomore Ashley Anderson with 15 points and five rebounds. Freshman Rachel Kane added a career-high 12 points with four assists and four rebounds. Junior Anne Bailey rounded out the scoring chart, ending with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Washington took the early lead, earning a five-point advantage three minutes into the game. The Huskies extended the margin to ten points at the 10:00 mark. Bulldog junior Ashley Burke had foul trouble early in the game, with three personal fouls against her halfway into the first half.

Gonzaga battled back from the ten-point deficit to tie the game at halftime, 38-all. Freshman Stephanie Hawk started the comeback as she chipped in two free throws to bring the score to 31-22 with 5:21 on the clock. The Zags would turn that into an 11-2 run to narrow the margin to a two-point game.

The Huskies extended their lead to 37-34, but Maggie O'Hara's foul at 1:33 brought freshman Rachel Kane to the line. Kane hit both shots to bring the game within one point.

Washington's All-American Giuliana Mendiola was brought to the charity stripe, only making one shot for a 38-36 lead. Gonzaga had ten seconds to retaliate, as Mathews dished to Anderson for the tying jump shot.

The Bulldogs came into halftime with a fire and took the lead early, holding a 47-41 lead with 16:17 left in the game. The Huskies came back, taking the lead 48-47 and beginning a six-minute battle for a sure lead.

Washington came out on top with a ten-point lead, owning the scoreboard, 64-54 with 3:25 on the clock. Anderson fouled out of the game with 2:26 left, leading the team with 15 points. Anderson is the first Bulldog of the season to foul out of a game.

Pacific-10 2003 Player of the Year Giuliana Mendiola took control of the game for the Huskies, claiming the lead with 6:31 left in the game. Her 10-foot runner started Washington on a 16-4 run, to give the Huskies the 70-56 victory.

Gonzaga ended the first half with 56.5 percent from the field, but added a devastating 19.2 percent in the second half to average 36.7 (18-49) for the game. Washington went 46 percent (23-50).

The Bulldogs came up big with free throws, nailing 15-19 (78.9 percent) compared to the Huskies 70 percent (21-30).

Gonzaga heads back on the floor on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. to face Yale University in the consolation round of the Seattle Times Classic.
