SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Raeanna Jewell scored a game-high 16 points off the bench to lead the Gonzaga University women's basketball team to a 69-48 victory over Yale University in the consolation round of the Seattle Times Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Gonzaga (2-3) had three players in double figures as Jewell, Ashley Burke and Rachel Kane combined for 37 points. Jewell and Burke each also had a game-high seven rebounds.
Yale (0-4) was led by Erica Davis with 13 points, with Morgan Richards ending the game with nine points.
Neither team was able to dominate the first half, as the biggest lead was four points. Gonzaga shot a debilitating 20 percent (6-30), while Yale topped at 33.3 percent (8-24).
After exchanging the lead five times, both sets of Bulldogs headed into the locker room at half in a 28-all tie.
The Zags came out at halftime with a different attitude as they went on a dominating 18-4 run to take a 14-point lead with 13:25 on the clock. Burke became a major factor for Gonzaga, scoring eight points in the first ten minutes of the second half.
The Zags took control of the defensive game also, outrebounding the Bulldogs by 20 (38-18) by the ten minute mark.
Gonzaga ran away with the game in the second half, building as much as a 24-point lead over Yale. The Bulldogs attempted to come back, but the Zags controlled the remainder of the game, ending with their biggest lead of the season of 21 points.
Gonzaga ended the game shooting 40.9 percent (27-56) while Yale ended with 36 percent (18-49). The Zags went 18-17 from the charity stripe and the Bulldogs went 10-17.
Gonzaga continues its weekend road schedule as the Zags travel to University of Utah on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. PST.
