Women's Hoops Shut Down UC Riverside

SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Raeanna Jewell knocked down four three-pointers and totaled a game-high 18 points as the Gonzaga University women's basketball team defeated UC Riverside, 68-54, on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs extended their win streak to three games, while the Highlanders remain winless on the season.

Gonzaga (5-5) was led by Jewell, followed by sophomore Ashley Anderson with 12 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Shannon Mathews marked the only double-double of the game with ten points, ten assists, while junior Ashley Burked added ten points and six rebounds.

UC Riverside (0-5) was led by Jodi Reber with 14 points, five assists, with Casandra Reeves scoring 11 points. LaKeima Stephens added a game-high seven rebounds for the Highlanders.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-8 lead with three three-pointers in the first 5:27 of the game. Gonzaga built up a 14-point lead with 10:46 in the half with five three-pointers and kept the lead for the remainder of the half. UC Riverside went into the locker room at halftime with a 13-point deficit, while three Bulldogs scored in double figures.

The second half was no different as Gonzaga took charge, building as much as a 23-point advantage. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Highlanders 28-18 in the second half alone, despite Gonzaga's 11 turnovers to UC Riverside's four.

The Bulldogs shot 41.5 per cent (27-65) from the field, while the Highlanders went 40.4 per cent (19-47). Gonzaga ended the game with 40 rebounds to UC Riverside's 31.

The Bulldogs will continue their six-game homestand as they return to The Kennel on Monday, Dec. 29 to take on Seattle University at 7 p.m.
