Women's Basketball Dominates Seattle University

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University scored nearly twice as many points than Seattle University as the women's basketball team shut down the Redhawks in a 76-40 victory in The Kennel on Monday night.

The Bulldogs (6-5) were led by junior forward Ashley Burke with 22 points on the night and six rebounds. Junior Raeanna Jewell also scored in double figures with 12 points and tying her career high of six steals. Freshman Rachel Kane established a new career high with nine assists.

The Redhawks (5-6) featured leading scorer Thresia Busch as the only player to mark double digits with ten points and six rebounds. Marisa Young added six assists for Seattle University.

Gonzaga took a 15-point halftime lead, despite the seven-all tie with 15:32 to start the half. Freshman Katy Ridenour started a 12-2 run with her jump shot at 6:33 to give the Bulldogs a 33-18 advantage. Burke had already marked 13 points and four rebounds going into the second half.

Turnovers proved fatal for Seattle University in the first half with 17 accompanied by a 31 per cent field goal average (9-29). Gonzaga went 7-10 from the line in the first half, without giving the Redhawks a chance to step up to the charity stripe.

The second half was no different as the Bulldogs took control of the game, steadily building the final 36-point advantage. Jewell scored eight of her ten points during the second half, with two three-pointers. Seattle only scored ten points in the final 7:06 of the game.

Gonzaga ended the game shooting 50 per cent (27-54) while Seattle shot 30.5 per cent (18-59). The Bulldogs dominated in free throws as well with 75 per cent (18-24) and the Redhawks went 2-for-7 to end with 28.6 per cent.

Gonzaga will host Eastern Washington University in a doubleheader with the Bulldogs' men's basketball team at the Spokane Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 31. The women's game will tipoff at 2 p.m.
