Women's Hoops Get Third Straight WCC Win

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Junior Ashley Burke sank a layup at the buzzer in the second half to push the Gonzaga University women's basketball team into its first overtime game of the season as the Bulldogs won their third-straight West Coast Conference game over University of San Francisco, 72-61, on Thursday evening.

Gonzaga (10-6, 3-0 WCC) was led by sophomore Ashley Anderson with 16 points, nine rebounds, followed by Burke and junior Raeanna Jewell with 13 each. Freshman Rachel Kane nearly hit double figures with nine points for the Bulldogs.

San Francisco (7-8, 0-2 WCC) featured two players with double-doubles despite the second-straight loss. Mary Jane Krueger scored 16 points, 11 rebounds, while Joy Hollingsworth scored 10 points and 11 rebounds. Carey Sauer also chipped in 11 points for the Dons.

Gonzaga took the early lead and never relinquished the advantage the entire first half. The Bulldogs were able to take the margin up to 11 points with 9:58 remaining in the half. San Francisco fought back, narrowing the advantage to six points at the break, 32-26.

The second half was a different story as the Dons took their first lead of the night at 13:34 with a 38-37 lead. Gonzaga was able to march back up to a seven-point lead, but San Francisco whittled away to bring the game to a 55-all tie with 1:12 to go.

Toni Russell came up big for the Dons, putting away her two free throws to take the two-point advantage with five seconds on the clock. Burke came as the spoiler, with a layup at the buzzer to push the game into overtime.

The Bulldogs dominated the overtime period, outscoring San Francisco 15-4 for the final score in Gonzaga's favor, 72-61.

The Bulldogs shot 58.3 percent in the first half (14-24) with 49 percent from the field all night. The Dons never made it over .500, shooting 38.5 on the night (20-52).

Gonzaga will travel down the road to look for a four-game WCC win streak as they take on Saint Mary's College on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
