Fri., Oct. 15 - San Francisco, 3 p.m.
Sun., Oct. 17 - Saint Mary's, 2 p.m.
BULLDOGS REMAIN HOME: Gonzaga University will continue to get some home cooking this week when the Bulldogs play a pair of West Coast Conference home matches. The University of San Francisco visits Friday for a 3 p.m. match with Saint Mary's College in town Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Both matches are part of a men's/women's doubleheader. The Bulldog women face Loyola Marymount University on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and Pepperdine University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
THORARINSSON UPDATE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is still recuperating at home following an automobile-bicycle accident Oct. 2 in Los Angeles. He was released from UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, Calif., and returned to Spokane earlier this week. Thorarinsson had surgery Oct. 4 to repair facial injuries suffered in the accident, including a broken jaw. "Our only concern about Einar is that he make a full recovery and doctors assure us he will," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "We are not concerned about when or if Einar will return to the sidelines this year. We want to be certain that when he does return that he is completely healthy and cleared to do so. We will abide by what the doctors tell Einar and evaluate the situation on a weekly basis. In the meantime, assistant coaches Mike Thompson and Mike McCarthy will continue to run the team as they have been for the past two weeks."
TOUGH LOSS: Gonzaga University returned home for the first time since Sept. 11 last Sunday and lost a tough 1-0 decision to fourth-ranked Santa Clara University in the West Coast Conference home opener for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga fell to 0-3-0 in the WCC chase. It marked just the second road win for either team in the series, the Broncos claiming the other road victory 1-0 in Spokane in 1994.
SOSNOVEC TOUGH: Sophomore keeper Sean Sosnovec had perhaps his best day of the season in goal on Sunday despite the 1-0 loss to fourth-ranked Santa Clara University. The transfer from DeAnza JC had nine saves to keep the Bulldogs in the match. Several of his saves were of the point-blank variety off rebounds. The native of Portland, Ore., had seven saves in the season opener against the University of Washington for his previous high. It was the second time this season a Bulldog keeper has turned back nine shots, Dade Smith turning the trick against Oregon State University.
STAYING HOME: Gonzaga University is in a stretch where the Bulldogs play 6-of-7 matches at home. The lone road trip for the Bulldogs the rest of the month is next Friday when they visit the University of Portland.
LOOKING FOR A WIN: Gonzaga University will try to snap an 11-match West Coast Conference losing streak when the Bulldogs entertain the University of San Francisco Friday at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs, 0-3-0 this season, went 0-6-0 last season and lost the final two matches of the 2003 campaign. Last year was the first time the Bulldogs had gone winless in WCC play since 1994 when they went 0-5-1 in their second year in the conference. The Bulldogs shared the regular-season crown in 1997 and 1998 but both years lost the tiebreaker for the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
BLANKED: All seven Gonzaga University losses have been via shutout this season. The Bulldogs were blanked a school-record 12 times in 1987 and suffered 11 shutouts in 1986. The most times the Bulldogs have been blanked since joining the West Coast Conference is eight in 2002, three of them coming in conference play.
BULLDOGS VS. DONS: Gonzaga University holds a slim 6-5-0 lead in the series with the University of San Francisco. The Dons have won two straight, taking last year's decision 2-1 in San Francisco and 2-0 in 2002 in Spokane. The Bulldogs had won six straight in the series prior to dropping the last two outings.
BULLDOGS VS. GAELS: After 11 matches the series between Gonzaga University and Saint Mary's College is even at 5-5-1. SMC snapped a three-match winless streak in the series last year with a 5-0 whitewashing of the Bulldogs in Moraga, Calif. The teams tied 1-1 in overtime in Spokane in 2002 in a match that was halted after just one overtime period because of darkness.
TIME CHANGE: Gonzaga University's match next Friday at the University of Portland will start at 7 p.m. Some schedules reflect a different start time. The Pilots installed lights earlier this season and several home matches at Merlo Field were switched to 7 p.m.
ON THE INTERNET: All Gonzaga University home matches and several road matches can be followed in real time on the Internet via Gametracker. Go to the Gonzaga web site at http://www.gozags.com and look for the Gametracker link in the Upcoming Events listing. Click on the link and follow the Bulldogs up to the minute. Gametracker is a service of College Sports Online, official athletic website provider for Gonzaga.
THE THORARINSSON TALE OF THE TAPE: Gonzaga University head coach Einar Thorarinsson is 88-72-10 in his 10th season with the Bulldogs. His overall record is 202-124-23 that includes nine seasons across town at Whitworth College. After going 3-10-2 in his first season of 1995, the Bulldogs have had winning seasons in six of the last eight seasons under Thorarinsson. His teams led the West Coast Conference in wins with a 14-4-0 record in 1997 and 12-4-2 mark in 1998, capturing WCC co-championships in each of those seasons. The Bulldogs were 9-5-2 in 2001, making their inaugural College Cup appearance.
