SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of Portland got second-half goals from Sean Babcock and Matthew Dallman to complete a weekend sweep of Gonzaga University with a 2-0 win Sunday at Martin Field in a West Coast Conference men's soccer match.
The Pilots (8-5-1; 3-3-1) downed the Bulldogs (5-10-0; 1-6-0) by the same score Friday night in Portland.
Portland keeper Luis Robles had two saves in recording his sixth shutout of the season. Gonzaga has been blanked in all 10 losses this season.
Babcock's free kick from 30 yards on the right wing hooked to the left and sailed high into the top of the net over Gonzaga keeper Sean Sosnovec at 71:54 to break the scoreless deadlock. It was the second goal of the season for Babcock.
Dallman, who had a goal and an assist in Friday's victory, collected his fourth goal of the season when he got his own rebound at 82:02. Sosnovec made a sliding save in traffic on Dallman's initial shot from inside the box but was unable to smother the rebound and Dallman had an easy put back into the wide open goal.
The Bulldogs had an excellent chance early, Robles diving to his right to knock the ball out of bounds on John Palladino's shot from the right wing to the far post. John Reha also had a shot ticketed for the goal from 8 yards out to the left of the box, but a Portland defender blocked the wide-open shot at the last second.
Sosnovec's toughest of his four saves in the match came at 63:52 when he stopped Paul Robinson's header to the far post off a Pilots corner kick.
The Bulldogs also had to play the final 15:12 shorthanded when referee Sharam Pourazari, apparently taking a no-tolerance stance for language, issued a second yellow card to Palladino which resulted in a red card ejection as a result of two yellow cards in a match. It was also Palladino's second red of the season meaning he will have to sit out both Gonzaga matches this coming weekend. In all, seven yellow cards were issued in the match, four to Gonzaga and three to Portland.
The Bulldogs were without leading score Arni Pjetursson on Sunday after he injured an ankle in Friday's match at Portland.
The match also saw the return of Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson to the sidelines. Thorarinsson was injured in an automobile-bicycle accident Oct. 2 in Los Angels, had surgery Oct. 4 to repair a broken jaw and had not been at a practice or a match until Sunday.
Gonzaga concludes its home season with a pair of matches this weekend when Loyola Marymount University visits Friday at 3 p.m. followed by the University of San Diego on Sunday at 11 a.m.
