SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team (7-5-0) was on the losing end of a defensive struggle in a 1-0 overtime loss to the University of Oregon (3-6-1) Sunday at Pape Field.
The two teams battled back and fourth through two scoreless periods with both teams tacking their cracks at the goal but the goalkeepers stood their ground not allowing the ball to get by them.
Then three minutes into the overtime period Oregon's junior defensemen Katie Abrahamson, scoring her first goal of the season, broke the scoreless match when she headed a one-timer off a cross from junior midfielder Carlie Ashcraft to beat Gonzaga's junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen and give the Ducks a 1-0 shutout victory.
The Zags were outshot for the contest 14-9 and suffered their third consecutive shutout.
Oregon's junior goalkeeper Domenique Lainez recorded two saves in picking up the win for the Ducks and Gonzaga's Haugen recorded four saves on the day.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday as they close out their longest road trip of the season when they visit Moscow, Idaho to play the University of Idaho. GU will then return to Martin Field on Sunday as they will host the University of Portland in its West Coast Conference opener.
