SPOKANE, Wash. - University of San Francisco pulled a case of David and Goliath as the last-place Dons overtook the Gonzaga University women's basketball team, 59-53, on Sunday evening. The Bulldogs dropped to third place in the West Coast Conference in their last home game of the season. The Kennel held a record 3,029 fans for the women team's FOX Sports regional television.
Gonzaga (14-10, 7-4 WCC) was led by sophomore Ashley Anderson with 18 points and junior Ashley Burke with 14 points. Sophomore Anne Bailey led the defensive front with 10 rebounds, eight defensive. With the loss, the Bulldogs ended their 10 game win streak in The Kennel.
San Francisco (9-14, 2-8 WCC) won its second WCC game of the season, led by Toni Russell with 19 points and Merisa Leatherman with 12 points. Joy Hollingsworth and Mary Jane Krueger each had seven rebounds for the Dons.
Gonzaga opened up the early lead with an 11-2 run to start the game. San Francisco then made its own run to bring the game to an 11-10 standoff, but the Bulldogs kept control with seven unanswered points. The game became a see-saw after that with the teams exchanging the lead three times before Gonzaga was able to end the half at one point ahead of the Dons, 30-29.
Anderson paved the way for the Bulldogs with eight points in the first half, followed closely by junior Raeanna Jewell with seven points for Gonzaga. Russell led San Francisco with nine points at the half, followed by Leatherman with six points.
The second half was much of the same with the teams only separated by four points at the most during the first 19 minutes of the half. With a tie at 51-all and 2:21 remaining in the game, Krueger made a layup that became the beginning of the end for Gonzaga. Leatherman scored four points within the last 00:35 for the Dons, extending San Francisco's lead to the eventual six point victory.
The Bulldogs shot 43.8 percent (21-for-48) from the field and went the entire game without a 3-pointer. The Dons went 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the field with 86.7 percent (13-for-15) from the line.
Gonzaga will finish the 2003-04 season on the road starting with University of Portland on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
