PORTLAND<> - Juniors Shannon Mathews and Ashley Burke combined for 40 points as the Gonzaga University women's basketball team defeated the Portland Pilots, 83-71, in a West Coast Conference match on Saturday night.
Gonzaga (15-10, 8-4 WCC) was led by Mathews with her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 assists, followed by Burke with 19 points. Raeanna Jewell chipped in 14 points for the Bulldogs while Ashley Anderson had 13 points and freshman Katy Ridenour hit 11 points for the Gonzaga effort.
Portland (11-14, 6-6 WCC) was led by Khalila O'Rielly-Williams with 19 points, followed by Whitney Grant with 16 points. Freshman Ashlee Orndorff added nine points for the Pilots.
The score bounced back and forth, with neither team dominating an early lead. The teams tied as many as seven times, until the Bulldogs went on a 10-4 lead to end the first haf. Gonzaga held a 13-point advantage with the second half left in the game.
The Bulldogs shot 50 percent (16-for-32) from the field with four 3-pointers in the first half. The Pilots shot a staggering 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from the field, shooting only 3-for 6 from downtown the entire half.
Gonzaga kept control of the entire second half, increasing its lead to as many as 17 points as one time. The Bulldogs never let the lead slip away, ending the 40 minutes of regulation with an 83-71 final score.
Gonzaga ended the game shooting 54.5 percent from the field (30-for 55) and outrebounded Portland 36-29. Portland shot only 41.5 percent (22-for-53) from the field, going 35.3 percent from downtown (6-for-17) the entire game.
The Bulldogs return to action as they travel to Santa Clara University on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in Santa Clara, Calif.
