Waves Take Revenge On Women's Basketball

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine University turned the tables on the Gonzaga University women's basketball team as the Waves defeated the Bulldogs, 73-62, on Saturday afternoon. The loss for Gonzaga brings the Bulldogs into second place in the West Coast Conference, tied with Pepperdine with 6-3 conference records.

Gonzaga (13-8, 6-3 WCC) was led by Ashley Burke as she scored 19 points in 30 minutes of play. Junior Shannon Mathews hit 23 points for the Bulldogs and three assists.

The Waves (12-10, 6-3 WCC) were led by Shandrika Lee with 28 points for Pepperdine. Kelly Greathouse had 13 points on the night Jennifer Lacy and Nicole Funn added 10 each for the Waves.

Pepperdine held the lead from the beginning, going up by as much as 14 points during the first half, 29-15. Gonzaga attempted a comeback, but could only close the margin to nine points at the half, 33-24.

The Bulldogs came out fighting during the second half, closing the game to a one-point game, 42-41, with 13:12 on the clock with three straight 3-pointers by Raeanna Jewell, Anne Bailey and Burke, respectively. However, Gonzaga couldn't hold on as Pepperdine slowly crept away with the lead and the 11-point victory, 73-62.

The Bulldogs shot 47.8 percent (22-for-46), but recorded only six assists. The Waves shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) and held the advantage with a 34-27 ratio of rebounds.

Gonzaga returns home to host Saint Mary's College on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in The Kennel.
