LARAMIE, Wyo.- Annie and Sarah Hawkins combined to score three goals on Friday afternoon as the Gonzaga University women's soccer team posted a 3-1 victory in their season opener over the University of Wyoming (0-1) at the UW Soccer Stadium.
The Bulldogs (1-0) wasted no time in scoring as Annie Hawkins recorded the first goal of the match in the third minute. Hawkins took a lead pass from Ashley Pryor and slipped the ball past Cowgirls goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard giving GU a 1-0 early lead.
Sarah Hawkins then added to the lead as she recorded her first goal of the day on a penalty kick to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 cushion. She would seal the deal for GU in the 52nd minute with her second unassisted goal to give Gonzaga a 3-0 lead.
Wyoming's Mari Gomes spoiled the shutout for the Bulldogs in the 54th minute as she was able to slip one past Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen, putting the game at its final of 3-1.
Haugen recorded five saves as she picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Wyoming's goalkeeper Sheppard recorded one save as she took the loss for Wyoming.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to play No. 15 Utah with a game time slated for 12:00 p.m. Gonzaga will return home on Sept. 3 to open their home schedule against Utah State at 3:00 p.m.
