PORTLAND - Senior outside hitter Christina Davis hammered home 29 kills on Friday night as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs pulled out a four-game victory over host Portland State University during opening night action at the PSU Volleyball Showcase. The Bulldogs improved to 2-4 overall winning the contest 29-31, 30-21, 30-26 and 30-24. Portland State dropped to 4-2 on the season.
Davis powered the Bulldogs offense all night long as she was the only Gonzaga player to reach double-digit kills. Davis finished the night with a .424 attack percentage as her 29 kills came with just four errors on 59 attack attempts. The 29 kills was the fifth best 4-game match total in Gonzaga school history tying Jennifer Goetz and Kelley Cunningham on the list. Davis' offensive explosion was helped by the solid setting of senior setter Emilee Gihring who finished the night with 43 assists.
Gonzaga played well in both games one and two falling by two points in the first game before rallying to win game two over the Vikings. In games three and four the Bulldogs built good early leads and held on to win each game. Freshman middle blocker Briawna Mueller was a force at the net finishing with 12 blocks, two of them solos. The 10 blocks assisted rank third on the Bulldogs single-match list while the 12 total blocks falls into seventh place.
The Vikings offense was led by Melissa Osterloh with 22 kills while Jessica Brodie added 19.
Gonzaga returns to tournament action on Saturday with matches against Northern Colorado and Oregon.
