PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University volleyball team continues to struggle against Northwest rival Washington State University as the Bulldogs dropped their 15th straight match to the Cougars falling in three games on Tuesday night in Pullman. WSU improved to 2-6 on the season winning 30-19, 30-25 and 30-28. Gonzaga fell to 3-6 on the year and has failed to knock off Washington State since the 1990 season.
Both teams were sluggish on offense coming off tough weekend tournament action. WSU combined for 51 kills and a .236 attack percentage while GU could only muster 43 kills and a .163 attacking clip. Gonzaga head coach Kip Yoshimura was concerned with his team being a little worn down after four-games over the weekend and some of the signs of tiredness appeared against WSU.
Jen Barcus led three Cougar players into double figures with 15 kills on 23 attacks while Jennifer Todd added 12 and Kelly Rosin chipped in with 10. Gonzaga was led by seniors Christina Davis with 13 kills and Lauren Armas with 12. Freshman Becky Jones was third on the Bulldogs roster with six kills as only six GU players finished with kills in the match.
Lacey Bell led Gonzaga will 11 digs while Jessica Herrera added 10. Stacey Holbrook was the top Cougars player with 11 digs. WSU dominated play at the net finishing with 24 blocks, Todd having seven and Barcus six. WSU also controlled the match on serve dropping in 12 aces, Nicole Martin and Holbrook each having four.
Gonzaga travels to Idaho State this weekend for three games in the Idaho State Volleyball Classic. The Bulldogs will face host Idaho State on Friday night and finish up on Saturday with matches against New Mexico State and Wyoming.
