Volleyball Drops Two Matches On Saturday

POCATELLO, Ida. - The weekend ended in disappointing fashion for the Gonzaga University Bulldogs as they dropped both games on Saturday afternoon at the Idaho State Volleyball Classic. After knocking off the host Bengals to open tournament action on Friday night Gonzaga was handed a 3-0 loss by New Mexico State University and a 3-1 setback to the University of Wyoming. Gonzaga falls to 4-8 on the season and will take a much needed week off before hosting the University of Idaho on Monday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. in Martin Centre.

In the opener New Mexico State's (8-1) offense was very productive finishing with 53 kills and a .341 team attack percentage. Sarah Silagy led the Aggies attack as they defeated Gonzaga 30-14, 30-22 and 30-24. Kristin Hendricks added 10 kills to NMSU. Gonzaga's offense was led by Christina Davis with 14 kills while Lauren Armas contributed 11. New Mexico State set the tone for the match at the net as they combined for 26 blocks, Alice Borden leading the way with nine assisted blocks. Both teams also did a great job on defense with three GU players reaching double-digit digs and four New Mexico State players finishing in double figures. Jessica Herrera led all players with 16 while Davis added 14. Briana Akrie led the Aggies with 14. This is the second time this season that NMSU knocked off Gonzaga, the Aggies winning in four-games at the season-opening Boise State tournament.

In the second game of the day Gonzaga and Wyoming (5-5) waged a tough battle through the first three games before the Bulldogs ran out of gas in game four. Wyoming won the opener 35-33 before holding on to win the match 30-27, 27-30, 30-19. Sara Maytorena led all players with 20 kills on 40 attacks while Rachel Smith added 16 kills and Angie Hellbaum 15. Gonzaga had four players reach double-digit kills with Davis leading the charge with 18 kills. Armas followed with 15 while Briawna Mueller and Becky Jones each contributed 11. The teams both played well on defense with Herrera finishing with 15 digs and freshman Alecia Douglas adding 13 for GU. Wyoming was led by Rachael Booth with 23 digs. Lauren Scott led the Cowgirls with nine assisted blocks while Mueller was the Zags top blocker with six.

The Bulldogs finish the weekend 1-3 and wrap up regular-season tournament action with a 4-5 record over three tournaments. GU will return to action against Idaho on Sept. 27 before opening West Coast Conference play on the road at Santa Clara (Oct. 1) and San Diego (Oct. 2). The Bulldogs were picked to finish last in the WCC preseason poll. Senior Christina Davis finished the weekend with 200 kills for the year moving ahead of Abby Cullen for fourth on the Bulldogs career list with 1,150 career kills. Jennifer Kubista sits just nine kills ahead of Davis for fourth place.
