PORLTAND - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team remained perfect in West Coast Conference action after the Bulldogs picked up a 67-56 WCC at the University of Portland to end the first-half of the conference season at 7-0. Gonzaga improved to 18-2 overall, extending the nation's longest active winning streak to 14 games. Portland fell to 6-14 overall, 1-6 in the WCC.
Anne Bailey scored 19 points off the bench to spark the Bulldogs as the junior connected on 6-for-8 from the floor including a 10-point effort in the first half. Both teams traded baskets to open the game before Bailey and Shannon Mathews sparked a 12-4 run to end the half and give GU a 30-22 lead. Mathews would score 11 in the first half and end with 15, one of four Gonzaga players reaching double figures.
Following the halftime break, Portland chipped away at the Gonzaga lead closing to within 30-28 on a lay-up by Brooke Fernandez at the 17:12 mark. Ashley Burke led the Bulldogs on a quick 10-2 run over the next three minutes scoring six points as GU built their lead back up to 40-30. Gonzaga extended the lead to as many as 25 points with just over six minutes remaining as Burke finished with 18 points.
Portland scored 19 of the game's final 24 points but fell short as they connected for only 33 percent on the afternoon including a 1-for-15 effort from 3-point range. Amy Bottom led the Pilots with 16 points while Jamie Medley added 13. Botto was 8-for-18 from the field while Medley was 6-for-17.
Senior guard Raeanna Jewell rounded out the Bulldogs top scorers with 10 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Gonzaga finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field and 2-for-14 from the 3-point line. GU was effective from the free throw line hitting 15-for-17, Bailey and Burke were both perfect from the line finishing a combined 11-for-11.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday night when they make a WCC swing through the Bay Area. Gonzaga visits Saint Mary's College on Thursday night and Santa Clara University on Saturday night.
