SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore Cristin Leverson's goal in the 39th minute lifted the Gonzaga University women's soccer team to its, program best, sixth consecutive win, a 1-0 victory over Portland State University Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Martin Field.

With the win the Bulldogs remain undefeated at home posting a 4-0-0 record at Martin Field, are off to their best start in program history at 8-2-1 and have set a new program record with its sixth consecutive win. With the loss Portland State falls to 3-6-1.

With the field slippery and muddy from rain in the Spokane area over the past three days, the two teams engaged in a muddy battle with Gonzaga dominating time of possession in the early going. GU out shot the Vikings 12-1 in the first half with one of those shots finding the back of the net. At the 39:05 mark sophomore forward Nanda McCormick was able to deliver a lead pass to a streaking Leverson, who was able to out run the Portland State defender and hit a laser shot past Vikings goalkeeper Niki Brooks.

GU had several great scoring opportunities in the first half that didn't go its way. In the 41st minuet Leverson again found herself with a great scoring opportunity as she rose above the crowded goal box to redirect a cross pass with her head that was saved by Brooks. The ball then bounced off Brooks and landed at the feet of McCormick who tried to punch the ball past Brooks, only to see Brooks make another save.

Gonzaga senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen recorded one save en route to her 17th career shutout. Her counterpart, Brooks, allowed one goal and recorded eight saves in taking the loss for the Vikings.

The Bulldogs out shot the Vikings 17-5 and had a decisive 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs will look to increase its win streak on Tuesday as they travel to near-by rival Eastern Washington University for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match in Cheney, Wash. The Bulldogs will then open West Coast Conference play on Sunday when they head to square off against the second-ranked Pilots of the University of Portland in Portland, Ore.
