PORTLAND, Ore. - Life on the road continues to haunt the Gonzaga University Bulldogs as they dropped their 23rd straight road conference match on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 setback against the University of Portland. With the loss Gonzaga fell to 10-15 on the season and 2-6 in the WCC. Portland improved to 4-16, 1-7 in the WCC picking up the 30-18, 30-23, 30-21.
Playing without the services of freshman Michelle Boevers, the Bulldogs struggled to find any offense to fill her spot. Becky Jones led the team with 12 kills but was the only player to finish over seven kills. Briawna Mueller was second on the squad with six kills as the Bulldogs hit .081 as a team.
Offense was not the only area Gonzaga seemed to struggle with as they allowed 10 Portland aces on the day while the Bulldogs recorded none, marking the first time this year that Gonzaga had not dropped in at least one ace. Senior Jessica Herrera was a bright spot in the back court tying for match-high honors with 13 digs. Portland's Sara Vercruyssen also had 13 digs.
Vercruyssen was also the Pilots offensive leader with 13 kills as three Portland players finished in double figures. Jennifer Sheedy had 11 while Ashley Grayson chipped in with 10. Both Sheedy and Grayson also had 3 blocks as blocking was not a factor in the match. Sheena Surplus has 39 assists for the Pilots who split the season series with Gonzaga with both schools winning on their home court.
Gonzaga lost the services of Boevers last weekend on their trip to Los Angeles and she will miss the remainder of the season. Gonzaga returns to action next weekend with two matches at Martin Centre. GU is 2-2 at home this season including a four-game win over No. 25 Saint Mary's College in their last home match. GU will host the University of San Diego at 7 p.m. on Friday with Santa Clara University coming to town on Saturday night at 8 p.m. The match start time is one hour later than usual due to a men's basketball game at the McCarthey Athletic Center that starts at 5 p.m. Fans attending Saturday night's game are advised that parking near the Martin Centre may be difficult until the men's basketball crowd has departed which should be approximately 7:30 p.m.
