MORAGA, Calif. - On Oct. 15 this season the Gonzaga University Bulldogs picked up their first win over a ranked opponent since the 1993 season as the knocked off No. 25 Saint Mary's College in four games dropping the Gaels from the national rankings. Now on their home court nearly a month later, Saint Mary's returned the favor with a quick 3-0 win over the Bulldogs to split the season series. SMC won 30-25, 30-17, 30-16 to improve to 16-7 overall, 7-4 in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga falls to 10-18 on the year, 2-9 in conference.
Gonzaga came out determined in the first game as the Bulldogs stayed close with 12 kills and a .320 attack percentage. Unfortunately the other two games were not as solid for the GU offense as the finished both games two and three with a negative attack percentage. Becky Jones led Gonzaga with 8 kills but had 14 errors on 34 attacks. Sophomore Briawna Mueller was a bright spot for Gonzaga with 7 kills, no errors and a .538 hitting clip. Mueller also had five blocks, two of them solo, to move into 9th place on the Gonzaga single-season blocking list with 123 total blocks. Her 32 solo blocks this season moved her into 5th on that single-season list with former standout Lisa Petticord.
Mueller's five blocks were not nearly enough as the Gaels dominated play at the net. Saint Mary's had a combined 33 blocks with only one of them a solo block. Christina Kirk totaled 8 blocks including the solo block. Kirk also chipped in with 9 kills.
Missie Stidham was Saint Mary's main weapon on the night with 16 kills and a.382 attack percentage. The Gaels also dropped in 11 service aces, setter Mandy Bible leading all players with four.
Gonzaga plays its final road match of the season on Saturday night at the University of San Francisco. Following that they will be at home for the final weekend with a Thursday night match against Pepperdine University and Saturday night match against Loyola Marymount University. Both matches start at 7 p.m. at Martin Centre with Saturday's match including senior night ceremonies for Lacey Bell and Jessica Herrera. Herrera finished the game with 10 digs and needs just 5 more to crack the Gonzaga career Top 10.
