SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore Becky Jones hammered home a match-high 26 kills and moved into seventh place on the Gonzaga University single-season kills list, but it was not enough to overcome a balance University of San Francisco attack as the Dons picked up a four-game win. USF improved to 17-11, 4-8 in the West Coast Conference with a 30-26, 30-19, 25-30, 30-21 win over Gonzaga. The Bulldogs dropped to 10-19 overall, 2-10 in the WCC. Gonzaga rounds out the 2005 season this weekend with home matches against Pepperdine University on Thursday and Loyola Marymount University on Saturday.
Jones was outstanding all night for the Bulldogs as she had the 26 kills on 56 attacks for a .321 attack percentage. It was her sixth highest hitting percentage total of the season and second highest when she has collected more than 20 kills. Jones passed Nancy Miller (1994) as she increased her season total to 435 kills. Senior Jessica Herrera also cracked the record book on Saturday night with 17 digs to move her season total to 369, the eighth best single-season total at Gonzaga. Herrera also moved her career total to 972 with is ninth best in school history. She needs 18 digs over the final two matches to become the 9th Bulldogs player with 1,000 or more career digs.
Briawna Mueller and Lacey Bell were the Zags next best two attackers with Mueller finishing with 9 kills and Bell 8. Mueller also added 6 block assists to move into seventh on the single-season total blocks list. The sophomore middle blocker also cracked the career Top 10 moving into ninth with 249 career blocks.
Despite the solid effort by Jones, San Francisco had four players reach double digit kills with Kristen Hasselberg leading the charge with 20 kills. Spokane native KeLicia Shorts added 19 with a .450 attack percentage while Theresa Hart had 11 and Linzy Kearny 10. Brynn Maurer picked up 26 digs as the Dons held a 70-54 dig advantage. USF finished the match hitting .260 as a team with Darcy Carroll passing out 49 assists.
Gonzaga will recognize seniors Lacey Bell and Jessica Herrera next Saturday night prior to the match against LMU. Both final matches at the Martin Centre are 7 p.m. starts.
