SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University volleyball team honored seniors Lacey Bell and Jessica Herrera on Saturday night but the Bulldogs fell short in their effort to send them out with a win as Loyola Marymount University (19-9, 7-7 WCC) picked up a four-game West Coast Conference victory at the Martin Centre. LMU won 30-23, 18-30, 30-24, 30-18. With the loss Gonzaga season ends with a 10-21 record and 2-12 mark in the WCC.
Both teams came out swinging well in the opening game as LMU hit .405 with 19 kills and Gonzaga countered with 18 kills and .342 clip. The Lions used a four-point rally in the middle portion of the game to give them the needed edge as the teams traded points over the remainder of the game. Emily Day had five of her 17 kills in the opening game including kills on the final two points. Tianna Tuatagaloa had three of her eight kills for the Bulldogs in the game.
GU jumped out to an early lead in game two and was able to put away the Lions behind the solid hitting of Becky Jones. The sophomore outside hitter had seven kills on her way to a match-high 19 for the night. She finished the season with 471 kills to rank sixth on the Bulldogs single-season list.
The Bulldogs stayed close in the early portion of game three before LMU was finally able to put Gonzaga away. Four LMU players finished in double figure kills as Christianna Reneau (16), Dina DeBernardi (13) and Heather Hughes (10) all joined Day as the Lions top hitters. Reneau also had 16 digs for a double-double.
Lacey Bell joined Jones in double digit kills with 12 on 33 attacks while Jessica Herrera had 18 kills to finish her career with 990 career digs good for ninth on the all-time list. Sophomore middle blocker Briawna Mueller finished with 8 kills and a .462 attack percentage as she completed the season with a .286 hitting clip the eighth best single-season effort at Gonzaga.
