Bulldogs Cruise By Utah Valley State, 7-3

PASCO, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team scored five runs on five hits in the sixth inning to cruise to a 7-3 win over Utah Valley State College Friday afternoon at Columbia Basin College.
With the win the Zags snapped the Wolverines four game win streak and improve to 4-3, while Utah Valley State drops to 4-4.
After taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning the Bulldogs bats came alive in the sixth inning. Senior Jeff Culpepper got things started for the Bulldogs when he rocketed a single deep to right field bringing across Scott Campbell, who had singled, and junior catcher Kiel Thibault was able to come across when the UVSC right fielder made an error on the throw. Freshman third baseman Darin Holcomb then rocketed an RBI double to left field, platting Culpepper. Junior Will Ayala hit a two run home run off Utah Valley State's starting pitcher Jed Jensen to end the big inning for the Zags.
Culpepper led the offense for the Bulldogs as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, one double and one triple.
Gonzaga got another strong pitching performance by junior right-hander Josh Monroe (2-0) who allowed five hits and one run in eight innings of work in picking up the win. Jensen (1-2) was saddled with the loss allowing seven runs, one unearned, on eight hits in six innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday when then play in a 2 p.m. game against Utah Valley State at Columbia Basin College.
