PORTLAND, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team swept the doubles matches and scored two singles victories but was unable to keep up as they fell to the University of Portland narrowly, 4-3.
With the loss Gonzaga drops to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in West Coast Conference play. Portland improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in WCC play.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point easily as senior Angela Fry paired with classmate Sirrah Williams in the No. 1 spot to defeat Portland's Lindsey Griffin and Sanja Indic, 8-3. In the No. 2 spot Kendall Bates teamed with Amanda Becker and downed the Pilots tandem of Jaclyn Soltysik and Christina Feyen, 9-7. GU finished its dominance in doubles play when the freshman duo of Sydney Lederhouse and Erin Humphrey defeated Alyson Tyson and Adele Rockett, 8-4.
Singles play proved tough for Gonzaga as Becker lost her match to Indic, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Fry stepped up to win her match in straight sets against Tyson, 7-6 (4), 6-2 and Lederhouse won her match in straight sets over Feyen, 6-4, 6-1, but Portland defeated GU in the remaining four singles matches to win the match.
The Bulldogs return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. when they take on Saint Mary's College in Portland, Ore.
