STUART, Fla. - Jimmy Hayes fired a first round 78 to stand in sixth place as Gonzaga University placed four golfers in the Top 16 to land the Bulldogs in third place on the Treasure Coast WTC Hero's Classic leaderboard at The Fox Club in Stuart, Fla.

Hayes was joined by Trevor Loe in a five-way tie for seventh while John Bergren and Reyn Tanaka were jumbled in a group of players tied for 16th. Gonzaga's final golfer Matt Munroe was tied for 29th after day one ended.

The Bulldogs shot a team score of 321 to stand four strokes behind the University of Evansville for second place. Bethune-Cookman College was the runaway leader after round one with a team score of 307. Oakland University was fourth followed by host St. John's University in fifth.

Stefan Strandlund of BCC was the opening round leader with a one-over 73 at the 6,646 yard, Par 72 course. Brian Stuard of Oakland was tied for second with Bethune-Cookman's Thomas Kearney. Carl Corbin (BCC) and Shawn Marshall (Evansville) rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth.
