Gonzaga Cruises by Portland

LEWISTON, Idaho -Freshman third baseman Darin Holcomb went 3-for-5 with two home runs, one double and four RBI to help the Gonzaga University baseball team cruise to a 13-1 victory over the University of Portland Pilots in a non-conference game at the Banana Belt Baseball Classic at Harris Field Saturday morning.
With the win the Bulldogs move to 7-5 and the Pilots drop to 5-8.
GU did most of its damage in the fourth inning as the Zags scored six runs on five hits. Holcomb got things started as he rocketed a two-run double to right field bringing across Will Ayala and Aaron McGuinness. Portland starting pitcher Ari Ronick then surrendered back-to-back home runs, a three-run shot to junior catcher Kiel Thibault and a solo home run to sophomore first basemen Bobby Carlson to give the Bulldogs a 7-1 lead.
The Bulldogs recorded two runs in the second, three in the sixth and one run in each the third and eighth innings to round out the scoring for the Zags.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Holcomb went 3-for-4 with two home runs, one double five RBI and Carlson went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Patrick Donovan (3-1) picked up the win for the Bulldogs allowing one run on four hits and nine strike outs in eight innings of work. Ronick (1-2) was saddled with loss for the Pilots allowing nine runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Gonzaga will be back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as they play the second game of a double header against the Utah Valley State Wolverines at Harris Field.
