FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Darin Holcomb's 4-for-5 three RBI performance helped the Gonzaga University baseball team (9-6) claim a 14-6 win over Penn State University (2-4) Tuesday afternoon at the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic.
The Bulldogs did most of their scoring damage in the fourth inning as they scored five runs on three hits. Shawn Wayt got things started for the Zags with his RBI single up the middle bringing across Matt Hibbitts, who had doubled. Holcomb then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which brought home Mike Terry for the second run of the inning. Sophomore first basemen Bobby Carlson then blasted a three-run home run off the PSU relief pitcher to end the scoring for the inning.
The Bulldogs would tally two runs in first and ninth innings, one run in the third and seventh innings and three runs in the eighth inning to round out the scoring for the game.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Holcomb went 4-for-5 with three RBI and one home run, Carlson went 3-for-4 with five RBI and two home runs and Wayt went 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Josh Bryant (1-0) picked up his first win of the season allowing no runs on two hits in four innings of work. Alan Stidfole (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Penn State allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wed. as the Zags will go to battle with Monmouth University in a 4 p.m. game at Beiden Field.
